YearUp Miami, a program designed to provide opportunities in experience, education, and employment to urban young adults, celebrated its 2nd Anniversary on November 5th. The celebration event was held at Miami-Dade College’s Wolfson Campus, and was widely attended by industry leaders and advocates of this incredible program. United Data Technologies is a proud Corporate Sponsor of the program, and is honored to host one of YearUp Miami’s interns at its Doral headquarters.
YearUp was founded in 2000 by Gerald Chertavian in Boston, MA as a program to help talented youth who happened to be limited by zip code, bank balance, or school system reach their potential with the right support and opportunities. Over the past 14 years, the program has expanded to 10 other locations including right here in Miami.
The mission of the program according to its website is to “close the Opportunity Divide by providing urban young adults with the skills, experience, and support that will empower them to reach their potential through professional careers and higher education.” YearUp achieves this goal by offering a one-year intensive training program for young adults (age 18-24) with skills development, college credits, corporate internships, and support. Students can enroll in technical and professional skills classes in order to help better prepare them for real-world job experiences they will encounter in their internships and future jobs. YearUp relies on corporate and federal partners to provide internships for students in order to give them experience in a real world work environment. Corporations throughout the country are encouraged to hire talented young adults who graduate from the rigorous training program, and who have been able to demonstrate talent in the workforce despite earlier economic, or societal setbacks.
